Activity 2

Card Stock/Large Paper Scale Model

This activity focuses on accurately scaling down the celestial body to fit on the card stock (or large paper for the Sun) while maintaining proportions and creating a professional colored model. The colors used must represent the celestial body as seen from space, not as perceived through Earth's atmosphere.

Steps

Here is some basic scaffolding to help students complete the activity.
1. Use the scale factor provided by your math teacher. This scale is pre-determined and should be used for consistency.
2. Calculate the scaled size of your celestial body using the formula: Scaled Size = Actual Size / Scale Factor.
3. Draw a precise circle (or other shape, depending on the celestial body) on the card stock, using the scaled size as the diameter (or relevant measurement). If assigned the Sun, calculate the dimensions for the large paper model.
4. Using colored pencils, markers, or other art supplies, carefully color and shade the card stock model according to your research and plan. Ensure that the colors accurately represent the celestial body as seen from space.
