Weather Wonders Sensory Show

KindergartenEnglishMathScienceSocial StudiesArtMusic20 days
In this kindergarten project, students collaboratively create a "Weather Wonders Sensory Show" to explore different types of weather and their impact on our senses and daily lives. They use art, music, and movement to represent weather phenomena, and incorporate mathematical terms and tools to measure and describe weather patterns. The project involves entry events like a mysterious weather machine, portfolio activities such as weather dress-up drama, sensory weather art, and a weather sounds symphony, culminating in a sensory show that demonstrates their understanding.

Question Framework

Driving Question

The overarching question that guides the entire project. How can we collaboratively create a weather sensory show that uses art, music, and movement to explore and represent different types of weather and their impact on our senses and daily lives, while also using mathematical terms and tools to measure and describe weather patterns?

Essential Questions

Supporting questions that break down major concepts.
  • What is weather?
  • What are the different types of weather?
  • How does weather affect our senses?
  • How can we represent weather through art, music, and movement?
  • How does weather affect our daily lives and activities?
  • How can we measure weather?
  • What tools can we use to measure different types of weather?
  • How can we collect and represent weather data?
  • How can we describe weather using mathematical terms?
  • How can we work together to create a sensory show?

Standards & Learning Goals

Learning Goals

By the end of this project, students will be able to:
  • Students will be able to identify and describe different types of weather.
  • Students will be able to represent weather phenomena through art, music, and movement.
  • Students will be able to explain how weather affects their senses and daily lives.
  • Students will be able to use mathematical terms and tools to measure and describe weather patterns.
  • Students will be able to collaborate to create a sensory show.

Entry Events

Events that will be used to introduce the project to students

The Mysterious Weather Machine

A large, unusual box arrives in the classroom labeled "Weather Machine - Do Not Open!". Inside are various tools (thermometer, rain gauge, art supplies) and a letter from a 'Professor Cloud' asking for help understanding weather to fix his malfunctioning machine, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for weather exploration.

The Great Weather Rescue

A group of stuffed animals is "stuck" in different weather scenarios (sunny, rainy, snowy). Students must learn about different weather conditions and create solutions to rescue the animals using their understanding of weather-appropriate clothing, shelter, etc.

Portfolio Activities

Portfolio Activities

These activities progressively build towards your learning goals, with each submission contributing to the student's final portfolio.
Activity 1

Weather Dress-Up Drama

Students will learn how weather affects daily life by choosing appropriate clothing for different weather scenarios and acting out related activities.

Steps

Here is some basic scaffolding to help students complete the activity.
1. The teacher will present different weather scenarios (e.g., sunny day, rainy day, snowy day).
2. Students will choose appropriate clothing and accessories for each scenario from a dress-up box.
3. Students will act out activities that are appropriate for the chosen weather, describing how the weather affects their choices.

Final Product

What students will submit as the final product of the activityA short skit where students dress appropriately and act out activities related to different weather scenarios.

Alignment

How this activity aligns with the learning objectives & standardsAddresses the learning goal: Students will be able to explain how weather affects their daily lives. Incorporates social studies by understanding how people adapt to different environments.
Activity 2

Sensory Weather Art

Students explore different art mediums to represent various weather conditions, focusing on sensory experiences and creative expression.

Steps

Here is some basic scaffolding to help students complete the activity.
1. The teacher will introduce different art materials (e.g., cotton balls for clouds, blue paint for rain, yellow and orange for sun).
2. Students choose a weather type and create an art piece representing it using the provided materials.
3. Students will describe how their artwork represents the chosen weather, focusing on how it feels or looks.

Final Product

What students will submit as the final product of the activityA weather-themed art piece that uses different textures and colors to represent a specific weather condition, along with a short description of the sensory experience it evokes.

Alignment

How this activity aligns with the learning objectives & standardsAddresses the learning goal: Students will be able to represent weather phenomena through art. It also touches upon how weather affects our senses.
Activity 3

Weather Sounds Symphony

Students will explore how different instruments and sounds can represent various weather conditions, developing auditory representation skills.

Steps

Here is some basic scaffolding to help students complete the activity.
1. The teacher will play different sounds related to weather (e.g., rain sounds, wind chimes, thunder).
2. Students will discuss what weather each sound reminds them of.
3. Students will use instruments (or their voices) to create sounds that represent different weather conditions.

Final Product

What students will submit as the final product of the activityA short musical piece using various instruments or vocal sounds to represent different weather conditions.

Alignment

How this activity aligns with the learning objectives & standardsAddresses the learning goal: Students will be able to represent weather phenomena through music. Enhances understanding of how weather can be perceived through auditory senses.
